Here on Millennial Personal Finance, I generally stick to writing about personal finance, and if you’ve read my blog, then you’ll know that generally pertains to student loans, parenting on a budget, budgeting as a college student (or any stage of your life really), saving money, and more topics that generally fit along those lines.
Well, occasionally I like to spice it up with some data-driven content! Just for the sake of proof, check one of my last examples when I wrote about some interesting CFPB complaint data on payday loans. At this point, I am sure you know where this is going because you are currently reading my next piece of data driven content! This one should be more fun than the last one.
I’ll cut to the point. If you read the title, then you clicked because you are interested in the most common names for Chinese restaurants in the United States. I know I was when I got started on this study. Let me explain my motivation. I love Chinese food (or at least the Americanized version of it). Needless to say, I’ve frequented quite a few different locations in my time, and one thing always seemed to stick out to me. There seems to be ton of cross over when it comes to these Chinese restaurants’ names!
At first, I assumed that many of these stores were part of a chain, but when I looked more closely from time to time, it became more apparent that many of these businesses were independently owned. With that thought in mind, set out to determine just how many Chinese restaurants share a name like “No. 1 Chinese Restaurant” (This one came in 38th overall in case you were wondering).
I hope you enjoyed my quick justification for the motivation behind this study! If you read on, you’ll see a table with the most commonly reported Chinese restaurant names as well as how frequently they appeared in the United States. Also just for fun, I decided to list out which states in the U.S. had the most Chinese food locations (if you’re curious as to how I did this, then read the methodology at the bottom).

All data reported in this study was provided by Onboard Informatics who specializes in providing various different types of data broken out by zip code. One such data set pertains to small and local businesses which was used for this study.
With this data set, I could pull the exact business name and location of all Chinese food restaurants (labeled “Restaurant – Chinese”) in the United States as reported by Onboard Informatics. Overall, over 28,000 Chinese restaurant locations were found. With a simple count function in Excel, I could record the number of times each of these names appeared within the entire data set. After finding the number of times each name appeared, I could rank these names based on number of appearances, and I included the top 100 results. This explains the first table.
For the second table, I used the same methodology with a different focus: counting the number of Chinese restaurants within each state. Instead of pulling the restaurant names, I pulled their locations which gave me a breakdown of all restaurants by state of residence. I was able to list out each state with the number of Chinese restaurants within its borders by using another simple count function in Excel. All 50 states and the District of Columbia were included in the report. This explains the second table.
I should probably add a couple of disclaimers here. Firstly, I am not an expert on Chinese restaurant names! These results are simply taken from Onboard Informatics who is responsible for collecting the information. It should be assumed to some degree that there may be a few locations out there that aren’t covered by Onboard Informatics.
